Pattison Eliot

The Skull Mantra

St Martin´s Press, New York 1999

Galbraith3

This is the first of the Tibet series by Pattison. Here the former police inspector Shan is introduced, who has to serve time in a desolate prison camp in the remote Himalayan mountains, because he had uncovered corruption in the highest party ranks in Tibet.

When a headless corpse is found, dressed in American clothes, governor Tan releases him temporarily so that he can investigate the murder. Shan meets with distrust both from the Chinese authorities and the local Tibetans.

Like his author Pattison, Shan has learned a lot about Tibetan religion and customs. Of course, in the end, the murder is solved and a Chinese gang of drug dealers at the highest levels is uncovered.
